Western Australia — A Unique Pokies Landscape
Western Australia is the only Australian state that bans electronic gaming machines outside its single casino (Crown Perth). This has shaped WA's gambling culture differently to the eastern states: Perth players who want pokies typically play online rather than at pubs, and the WA online pokies market is disproportionately active for the state's population size.
Online pokies regulation, however, is federal — governed by the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, not WA state law. The WA Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries oversees land-based gambling in WA, but online casino access is not state-restricted. WA players can legally access the offshore-licensed platforms reviewed by MatesWin (Crikey7, Bonza7, Dinkum33).
