What Are Lightning Link Pokies?
Lightning Link is a series of linked-jackpot pokies developed by Aristocrat. It uses the same Hold & Spin bonus mechanic as its sibling series Dragon Link: land 6 or more special orb symbols, lock them in place, receive 3 re-spins that reset on every new orb, and collect credit values plus potential jackpot tier wins.
The series includes High Stakes, Magic Pearl, Sahara Gold, Moon Race, Heart Throb, Happy Lantern, Best Bet and several others. Where Dragon Link titles share an Asian prosperity theme, Lightning Link titles range across diverse themes — ancient Egypt, underwater worlds, romance, safari and more.
Lightning Link pokies are some of the highest-grossing machines in Australian land-based venues. Crikey7, Bonza7 and Dinkum33 do not list Aristocrat among their studios, so none of them offers the official series. Online, the same hold-and-spin idea appears in games from other studios.
Hold & Spin — Quick Refresher
If you have read our Dragon Link guide, the mechanic is identical. If not, here is the short version:
- Land 6+ orb symbols on any positions → Hold & Spin triggers
- Orbs lock. You get 3 re-spins. New orbs reset the counter to 3.
- Each orb shows a credit value or a jackpot tier (Mini, Minor, Major)
- Fill all 15 positions → Grand jackpot
- 3 blank re-spins in a row → feature ends, all orb values paid
The four jackpot tiers (Mini, Minor, Major, Grand) are linked across all Lightning Link machines in a given venue link — separate from the Dragon Link jackpot pool.
Lightning Link Titles
| Title | Theme | Volatility | RTP Range | Standout Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High Stakes | Luxury casino, diamonds | High | 95.0-96.0% | Highest max bet in the series |
| Magic Pearl | Underwater, mermaids | Medium-High | 95.0-96.0% | Pearl multiplier during free spins |
| Sahara Gold | Desert oasis, camels | Medium-High | 95.0-96.0% | Expanding wilds in free spins |
| Moon Race | Space, lunar landing | Medium | 95.0-96.0% | Stacked wilds on reels 2-4 |
| Heart Throb | Romance, Valentine | Medium | 95.0-96.0% | Heart-shaped wild clusters |
| Happy Lantern | Chinese lantern festival | Medium-High | 95.0-96.0% | Lantern bonus with multiplier trail |
| Best Bet | Horse racing, jockey | High | 95.0-96.0% | Pick-a-horse bonus round |
Most popular: High Stakes and Magic Pearl. High Stakes attracts players who want the highest bet limits in the series. Magic Pearl appeals to players who enjoy underwater-themed pokies with a gentler volatility profile.
Best for new players: Moon Race or Heart Throb — medium volatility means steadier base-game action while you learn the Hold & Spin rhythm.
Lightning Link vs Dragon Link — Which to Play?
The honest answer: try both, because the core mechanic is identical. The choice comes down to personal preference:
- Prefer Asian themes? → Dragon Link (Autumn Moon, Golden Century)
- Prefer varied themes? → Lightning Link (underwater, space, romance, desert)
- Want higher volatility? → Dragon Link's Happy & Prosperous or Lightning Link's High Stakes
- Want steadier play? → Lightning Link's Moon Race or Heart Throb
- Chasing the biggest Grand? → Check which series has the larger jackpot pool at your venue at the time — it changes constantly
Many experienced Aristocrat players rotate between both series in the same session. The separate jackpot pools mean you are effectively contributing to — and eligible for — two different Grand jackpots.
Bankroll Tips for Lightning Link
Lightning Link pokies are medium to high volatility. Budget accordingly:
- Session bankroll: 150-250x your bet size. At $0.50/spin, bring $75-$125.
- Expect dry spells. 30-60 spins without a meaningful win is normal on medium-high volatility titles. The big wins come from Hold & Spin triggers, which average roughly once every 50-80 spins.
- Don't increase bets to chase Hold & Spin. The trigger is random. Larger bets do not increase the probability of landing 6 orbs — they only increase the credit values on orbs when you do trigger.
- Try it free first. The Lightning Link Casino app uses virtual coins, so you can feel the rhythm before you play a venue machine.
