About Aristocrat
Aristocrat Leisure Limited is an Australian gaming technology company founded in Sydney in 1953. It is the second-largest gaming machine manufacturer in the world and the studio behind many of the most recognisable pokies ever made. If you have played pokies in an Australian pub, club or casino, you have almost certainly played an Aristocrat machine.
Beyond the standalone classics, Aristocrat also produces the Dragon Link and Lightning Link series — their modern linked-jackpot pokies that use the Hold & Spin mechanic. This page covers Aristocrat's standalone classics; see the dedicated guides for Dragon Link and Lightning Link.

Most popular: Buffalo is the most-played Aristocrat pokie in Australian venues. The 1024-ways mechanic, stacked wilds and free spins with multipliers make it a high-variance classic that rewards patience.
Highest RTP: Big Red at 97.04% — one of the highest RTPs in the entire Aristocrat catalogue. A simple 5-line pokie with a generous gamble feature. Ideal for high-RTP pokie players.
Best for beginners: Queen of the Nile — straightforward 25-line gameplay, intuitive free spins bonus, medium volatility. This is the Aristocrat pokie most Australians tried first.
Online vs Land-Based RTP
You will often read that Aristocrat pokies return more online than in a venue. For Australian players that comparison is theoretical, because the online versions are not offered to them:
- Land-based (AU pubs/clubs): Aristocrat pokies are typically configured at 87-90% RTP in Australian venues. State regulations set minimums (85% in most states), and venues usually run close to that floor.
- Online: Aristocrat's licensed online versions publish around 94.5-97% RTP, but they run only in some regulated overseas markets and are not offered to people in Australia.
- For Australian players: the real choice is a venue machine, or a game from another studio online, where the RTP is shown in the game's info screen.
The game logic — symbol values, bonus triggers, payline patterns — is identical. Only the return percentage changes. For a deep dive on how RTP works, see our RTP explainer.
Buffalo Pokies — The King of Aristocrat
Buffalo deserves special attention because it is Aristocrat's most successful pokie franchise ever. The original Buffalo uses a 5-reel, 1024-ways format with stacked wilds on reels 2-5 and a free spins bonus with 2x and 3x multipliers that can combine for 27x payouts.
The franchise has expanded into multiple variants:
- Buffalo Gold: Added gold coin collection mechanic
- Buffalo Grand: Higher stakes, progressive jackpot
- Buffalo Diamond: Diamond symbols with enhanced multipliers
- Buffalo Link: Added Hold & Spin mechanic (similar to Dragon Link)
- Buffalo Gold Revolution: Latest version with enhanced features
In Australia these variants are venue machines. Crikey7, Bonza7 and Dinkum33 do not list Aristocrat among their studios.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Aristocrat pokies online for real money in Australia?
Not at an Australian-licensed site: Australia issues no online casino licence, and offering online casino games to people in Australia is illegal for the operator (playing is not an offence for you). Crikey7, Bonza7 and Dinkum33 do not list Aristocrat among their studios. In Australia, real-money Buffalo, Queen of the Nile, 5 Dragons and Where's the Gold are venue machines; Aristocrat's official mobile apps are social casinos with virtual coins.
Are online Aristocrat pokies the same as in pubs and clubs?
Where Aristocrat licenses online versions overseas, the game logic follows the venue design and the published RTP is usually higher (94.5-97% vs 87-90% in Australian venues). Those online versions are not offered to people in Australia.
What is the RTP of Aristocrat pokies online?
Published figures for Aristocrat's licensed online versions overseas run 94.5-97% (Big Red 97.04%, Buffalo 95.96%), but those versions are not offered to Australian players. On a venue machine, check the RTP on the machine's help screen.
Which Aristocrat pokies are available online?
None for real money to Australian players online. In Australian venues the best-known titles are Buffalo (and variants), Queen of the Nile, 5 Dragons, Where's the Gold, Miss Kitty, Big Red, Pompeii, More Chilli, Indian Dreaming, 50 Lions, plus the Dragon Link and Lightning Link series.
